The Penrith Panthers NYC team have notched their sixth straight victory and in the process have sent coach Garth Brennan out a winner as he coached the team for the last time before moving on to coaching the Windsor Wolves next week. The Panthers weren’t at their clinical best but still managed to win comfortably 30-14.

In beautiful conditions for rugby league the Panthers headed into the match full of confidence on the back of their unbeaten start to the year. However the first half was a scrappy affair with the Panthers taking their time to get into the match. Newcastle took advantage of the slow start and scored through their hooker, Eddie Proudler to take a 6-0 lead.

It wasn’t long until the Panthers hit back. Dynamic backrower Bryce Cartwright was the beneficiary of a classy short ball from five-eighth Daniel Foster that saw him score just to the right of the posts and level the scores at 6 all.

For the remainder of the half it was the Panthers who had the majority of attacking chances, and despite a few let-offs, the Panthers scored through co-captain Tony Satini to ensure they would head to the break with a lead.

With the half time score not reflecting the Panthers dominance the team came out and started the second half strongly with an early try to Watene-Zelezniak pushing the lead out to a comfortable margin. The Panthers big forwards rolled down the field in the second half and it wasn’t long until they turned their field position into points. Five second half tries to the Panthers would guarantee the Panthers remain top of the table. Despite two late tries to the Knights and an off day with goal kicking the Panthers proved far too strong for the opposition.

Panthers 30; Cartwright 2, Satini 2, Watene-Zelezniak, Moss, Yeo. Goals; Cartwright 1.

Knights 14; Proudler, Mamo, Hay. Goals; Shipard 1.
