Those Sayings ... ?

Postby S J » Sat Apr 06, 2013 8:41 am

We had one of these on the old site - so thought I'd start it here.

Last nights game had a few:

Commentator: Well, they've come here to play tonight .... (Hadley)
- well ... you'd certainly hope so !

Commentator: The Broncs are still well in it ... (Wally) .... the score was nil all at the time.

I always love the NZers comments:

They've pitched camp beside the sticks .... :)

And they have Vossie now too - I like his humour.

Yep - we get Vossy here on Fox - calling the games via Sky.

The Roast was my favourite TV show.

Lozza was good though - his greatest perhaps - as the player dropped a kick-off, or kicked out on the full - "He wouldna wanted to do that ..." ...:)

Surprised 9 took Hadley over Voss really. Hadley adds little to the league coverage in humble opinion.

I always thought Lozza was famous for having his seat pinch by Gus durring a SOO game haha

Agree. Hadley seems to still call like a radio game. Vossy was good IMO. You don't always need to state the obvious - when people can see it themselves.

Another classic from Lozza was talking in plurals - eg "the Smiths of the game" - when we only had one.

Allen McLaughlin is a rugby league commentator for Radio Sport New Zealand, and for all Warriors home games, his call is relayed to ABC Grandstand listeners on-line and on digital radio.

At a normal talking speed such as confirming the teams before kick off, he has no problem pronouncing Glen Fisiiahi. However at fast talking speed, which is when ever Glen touches the ball, the call is peppered with Glen Fishy-Arcy or Glen Fizzy-Arcy which is just so wrong.

Allen you need to work on that mate.

lol i knew Allan from playing cricket against his Papatoetoe club side. He's a grumpy old bugger but a good league man but he does struggle with the Fish.

You NZers are a bit tough aren't you?? Nobody could pronounce that name at full speed could they??

We have a few - some in the cricket. But I always feel some seem to have a list of comments ready.

For Manly fans: the word Spoonerism pronounced [spoo-nuh-riz-uhm] means:
the transposition of initial or other sounds of words, usually by accident, as in a blushing crow for a crushing blow.

During a SoO game about five years back, Ray Warren spoke an unpardonable spoonerism when calling a former Bronco's name...Karmichael Hunt.

It's a tough day at the office when you do that all by yourself., eh Rabs.
