Grant grew up in Wanganui and moved to Queensland as a teenager with his parents. He learned his rugby league trade with the Beerwah Bulldogs on the Sunshine Coast. In 1994 his form was rewarded with selection in the Australian residents team. In 1995 the South Queensland Crushers signed Grant and he went on to play 33 games for the Crushers. In 1996 he got his international call up for the Kiwis and played in series wins over PNG and Great Britian. By 1997 the Super League war was in full swing and Young aligned himself with Super League and as such had to move from his ARL aligned club the Crushers. Grant signed with the New Zealand club the Warriors. 1998 saw Grant released from the remaining year of his contract with the Warriors and he signed and moved to the London Broncos. After an unhappy time with London Grant moved back to Queensland and linked with his junior club once again and was still playing locally until 2008.
