Schools Look Towards Confraternity Carnival

St Joseph's (Toowoomba) and St James (Brisbane) will take part in the Confraternity Carnival later this year

THE annual Confraternity Carnival is approaching quickly and will be held at Brothers Townsville from June 24 – June 28, 2013.

This year, the carnival will feature 44 teams from schools throughout Queensland; making it one of the biggest school boy carnivals in Australia.

Last year’s champions Ignatius Park College will host this year’s carnival.

This carnival – which has been conducted every year since 1980 – has grown from eight teams in 1980 to a record 44 in 2013.

St Brendan’s College Yeppoon and St Patrick’s College Mackay jointly hold the record for the most number of titles won with 10.

The carnival consists of 16 teams in Division 1, 16 teams in Division 2 and 12 teams in Division 3.

On the final day of the carnival will conclude on Friday, June 28, with all grand finals from all three divisions.

Executive Officer of QISSRL Mark Bunting said this carnival would be one of the closest carnivals in years.

Last year’s champions Ignatius Park are in the same pool as St Brendan’s, which will make the chances of either side that little more difficult.

Last year, St Peter Claver College Riverview broke the stranglehold of St Brendan’s and Ignatius Park to play in their first final and look like being a force to be reckoned with again.

Original winners of the 1980 carnival Aquinas College of the Gold Coast (2014’s host school) have gone into Division 1 to test themselves against the “big boys” of the carnival.

All in all, the carnival once again promises to be the premier schoolboy carnival in Queensland.

Over the years, many NRL players have emerged from this carnival and include current NRL starts Johnathan Thurston (St Mary’s College Toowoomba), Scott Prince (Ignatius Park College), David Taylor (St Brendan’s College) and David Shillington (Padua College) just to name a few.

More than 60 ex-players have gone onto play in the NRL and further, including in State of Origin matches and for Australia.

Whilst I will not be there this year will take a little more interest as my oldest son has just started at St Pats. I will hopefully be able to spend a little bit of time with the league boys before they go away. They will find it hard as they only get 2 full weeks together before the carnival due to rugby commitments.
