NORTHS DEVILS v CQ CAPRAS

Referee: Robert Gallacher
Head to Head: Norths 20 Central 10 Drawn 2

There is no shortage of confidence in the Capras camp after their eye-catching performance against the Redcliffe Dolphins last week. It took a brilliant last-ditch try and sideline conversion from Redcliffe’s Liam Georgetown to deny the Capras a memorable win. Although the Capras had to settle for a draw, the fact they were able to cross for five tries against a team that held the Tweed to nil the previous week was a massive shot in the arm for the Central Queenslanders. Coach Jason Hetherington has the Capras playing a great attacking style of rugby league at the moment. Hooker Darcy Etrich, halfback Blake Wallace and lock Gavin Hiscox are combining brilliantly and creating endless scoring opportunities for the outside men. The Norths Devils have plenty of firepower at their disposal as well but it’s fair to say their attack hasn’t quite clicked this year. The Devils did run in three early tries against the Burleigh Bears in last week’s win but they were kept in check for the remainder of the clash. Livewire utility Angus Cameron gets a chance to lead the Devils around the park at halfback in the absence of skipper Matt Smith who is overseas attending a wedding. Although their form has been patchy, a Norths victory could lift Andrew Wynyard’s team into the top three.

QRL Media tips: Central Capras by 8. The Capras would love to put on a strong showing for fans at Clermont, which is hosting an Intrust Super Cup game for the first time.

I spent a night there once. The following morning I went for breakfast at a cafe and ran into a bloke from my hometown who I hadn't seen for years.

We stayed with the local Cop - he had an awesome outside oven set-up - in the ground.

Gibb has hand in Devils’ work

RUGBY LEAGUE: An inspired four-try haul from Broncoscontracted forward Brendon Gibb lifted Norths to a comfortable 46-26 win over Central Capras in their Intrust Super Cup clash at Clermont on Saturday night.
WORKHORSE: Brendon Gibb led the Norths efforts at the weekend.

The powerful 24-year-old reminded Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin of his immense talents with a dominant display agains the Capras, who were blown off the park in the first half to trail 34-10 at the break.

While he is better known for his toughness and high work rate in the middle, Gibb turned back the clock to revive memories of his junior days as an outside back.

The Devils have now won two on the trot and three from five in 2013, leaving them in second spot behind ladder leaders Northern Pride.

They will now travel to Mackay, who are coming off an upset win over Redcliffe, for a 6pm clash on Saturday.

In the FOGS Cup, the Devils remain second despite Sunday’s 26-16 loss to Easts at Bishop Park.

Norths’ colts beat Toowoomba 20-16 to stay in third place.
