Norths Devils CC Cup

THIS year’s Cyril Connell Cup winners are the Norths Devils following their spirited 44-6 performance against the Easts Tigers in the state final played at Langlands Park today.

The Devils scored nine tries – including six in the second half – to claim the impressive win which saw the club claim another junior state championship title.

While you can’t help but feel for the Tigers who were the standout team throughout the regular stages of the competition and came into today’s match undefeated; the Devils showed the best team on the day will take the victory, and after enduring a tough opening stanza; proved too strong in the later stages of the game.

Norths halves Josh Fauid and Logan Spaander had good games for their teams and both scored first half tries – helping set the platform for a big second half.

After a tough and high quality opening stanza, it was Fauid who broke the deadlock to score to the right of the field after the Tigers had initially held up hooker Jack Miers over the line.

The Tigers hit back via centre Tiian Wilkins with just over 10 minutes left to go in the half and it seemed after an even opening – the sides would go into the break with level pegging.

However, tries to second rower Lachlan Lanskey and to Spaander just before the break gave the Devils valuable momentum as they went to the sheds for the halftime break with a 16-6 lead.

The second half started with centre Keenan Yorston scoring the first of his two tries after a Spaander break downfield; which was compounded soon after when Lachlan Foulds added to his side’s total following another break.

Easts were guilty of trying hard and pushing passes and offloads and those errors were pounced on by the Devils.

Lanskey scored two more tries for his hat-trick while Yorston also scored again to claim a double in the big win.

The Devils will next meet their NSW counterparts in the National Final in a fortnight’s time. Keep an eye on www.qrl.com.au for more information regarding this match.
