THE undefeated Brighton Gaters have extended their winning streak to three on the trot, downing Carina in another dominant display at Jim Lawrie Oval on Saturday.

The Gaters delighted their home crowd by piling on 11 tries, powering through a struggling Carina defence in the 58-22 victory.

The visitors drew first blood when Brent Warr punched a beautiful grubber in behind the Gaters’ defence and followed through to plant the ball. One conversion later and Carina were up 6-0 after seven minutes.

The celebrations proved short lived - the Gaters roared back with a vengeance, piling on back-to-back tries in either corner, complements of Jordan Brown and Steve Franciscus. With the forwards laying down a great platform for the Gaters up the middle, the backline was free to run amok on the edges; Carina offering little resistance, with sloppy tackles and poor communication.

In attack, Carina looked little better, jeopardising what few scoring opportunities they had by giving away silly penalties out of frustration – often gifting the Gaters the ball in their own half.

The visitors’ woes were compounded by Brent Boyd’s kicking game. The halfback’s boot set up three more tries in a 15 minute blitz, with Boyd collecting the spoils of his own handy work on the third.

The conversion put the Gaters up 24-6 with eight minutes to play in the first half, and they put the remaining time to good use. Before the whistle sounded, the home team had clocked up another two tries off Carina penalties, sending the teams to their huddles with a scoreboard reading 34-6.

The second half proved to be no less problematic for Carina. Instead of mustering some much-needed intensity in defence, they allowed the Gaters to cross twice two in the first 10 minutes before they finally responded. Sioeh Makaui barrelled over the line straight out of dummy-half, with the conversion helping claw back some much-needed points.

Sparked by Makaui’s try, Carina underwent something of a resurgence and stepped up their defence on the Brighton forwards, but could not rein in the sheer speed and agility of Franciscus and Marlon Doak out wide.

Both teams scored two tries apiece in the final 20 minutes, sealing a never-in-doubt victory to Brighton.
