A SHORT, sharp season filled with both tight games and impressive winning margins will come to an end this weekend, with the final round of the Cyril Connell Cup and Mal Meninga Cup to be played at football grounds across the state.

For some teams – like the Wynnum Manly Seagulls Cyril Connell Cup and Toowoomba Clydesdales Mal Meninga Cup side – this will be their last chance to claim a win; although if it is not to be – it is hoped the players have enjoyed the experience and have developed their skills.

For other teams however – a victory this weekend will not only propel them into finals football – it could also give them that winning momentum going into the finals series.

Living up to the high expectations held for them before the Meninga Cup season began – the Townsville Stingers will go in to their final round match against the second-placed Central United looking to carry on their winning ways and finish the regular season undefeated.

Having claimed the Under 18 state title last year, the team coached by Steven Sheppard will be confident of performing well again – however, like all the Pools in both age divisions – the finals places won’t be decided until the round has been completed with a number of teams still in contention.

The Easts Tigers Cyril Connell Cup team has also had a successful time in the competition so far and haven’t lost a game, but they will face their toughest challenge in this week’s final round against Gold Coast White.

Sitting second on the ladder – the Gold Coast team will want to win to extinguish any challenge to their position presented to them by the Norths Devils, who are one win behind them, but with a superior for-and-against record.

Only the top two ranked teams in each Pool will progress, so with congested ladders and top-of-the-table clashes scheduled from Friday to Sunday at grounds from Gympie to Toowoomba – this weekend’s games are sure to provide plenty of entertainment.

Be sure to get out and see some great junior talent before they hit the senior leagues.
