Huge incentives lay ahead for Fiji secondary schools rugby league players this year.

Apart from the increased in $30,000 sponsorship from Vodafone, Fiji National Rugby League operations manager, Tomi Finau says they will encourage scouting of players for overseas opportunities.

“We will not promise the students anything but developing their natural talent into something attractive to NRL clubs will be the order of this year’s competition.”

Fiji Bati assistant coach, Joe Rabele says while the national side is preparing for the World Cup in October, development plans are also in place for young reps.

“We will try to identify from all the grades ie. 15-19 years old so we’ll select the best from this group then come the first term school holidays we’ll try to bring them in camp like what we’ve been doing for the Fiji Residents – we’ll talk about the diet, types of training and everything else.”

The Fiji Secondary Schools rugby league competition begins on Saturday.
