Former Wigan Warriors coach Graham Lowe is involved in the bid by racehorse owner Marwan Koukash to take control of crisis Super League club Salford City Reds.

Lowe has flown over from New Zealand at the request of Dr Koukash, who has spent the last week negotiating to buy the cash-struck club.

He is also working closely with Andrew Chalmers, a one-time chairman of the New Zealand RL board, and Ed Farish, a former finance officer of Australia’s National Rugby League.

Both are associates of Rugby Football League chief executive Nigel Wood, who has helped broker talks with both long-serving Salford chairman John Wilkinson and Salford City Stadium owners Peel Holdings and Salford Council.

Lowe, 66, was New Zealand’s national coach up to 1986 when he took charge of Wigan, whom he guided to both the Championship and the Challenge Cup in his three years at Central Park.

He was also coach of Queensland and held the positions of head coach and chief executive with Sydney club Manly Sea Eagles.

Salford head coach Phil Veivers has held informal discussions with Lowe but remains in the dark over any progress being made in the takeover talks.

“I’ve know Graham for a long time,” Veivers said. “We talked about the Eighties.

“As for the takeover talks, I only know what I read in the papers.”

Koukash is hoping to complete his takeover ahead of Salford’s opening Super League match against Wigan on February 1.

The two teams will meet in a pre-season friendly at Barton on Thursday night.

Koukash, who lives in St Helens, is also thought be considering a bid for the Salford City Stadium, the £26million ground shared by Aviva Premiership club Sale Sharks.
