Miller proud of U18s despite semi defeat

By ANDREW PIVA @ THE CAIRNS POST | Published: 22/04/13
NORTHERN Pride under-18s coach Cameron Miller has urged his players not to lose sight of what they achieved this season despite being eliminated by the Redcliffe Dolphins in the semi-final of the Mal Meninga Cup on Saturday.

The Pride lost 40-22 at Dolphin Oval after trailing 26-22 with 14 minutes remaining.

Miller had watched his side fight back from 16-0 down earlier in the match and thought his team would carry that momentum through to the end of the game.

‘‘I thought we let the opportunity slip,’’ Miller said.

‘‘I thought we out-enthused Redcliffe for much of the game.

‘‘I thought we we very dangerous in attack and physically we went to another level.

‘‘At 26-22, a few things didn’t go our way, to put it nicely, and we couldn’t come back.’’

Miller said his players were gutted after the final siren.

‘‘They were hurting massively,’’ Miller said.

‘‘We had spoken about the game all week, so it was very close to our heart about how much we wanted to do this.

‘‘It was a great opportunity for a lot of the boys who haven’t played on such a big stage before.

‘‘But a positive sign is that we had nine under 17-players in there. If all goes well, they’ll be back next year, which bodes well for the future.’’

It’s the second year in a row the Pride have been eliminated in the semi-finals of the Mal Meninga Cup, but Miller said just reaching the play-offs was an achievement worthy of celebration.

‘‘The work ethic and attitude have been fantastic all year,’’ he said. ‘‘And I think that’ll leave a legacy for the kids coming through.’’

Redcliffe Dolphins MM

THE Redcliffe Dolphins are this year’s Mal Meninga Cup state champions following their 44-16 win over Gold Coast White at Langlands Park today.

Things started poorly for the Gold Coast side who were penalised from the kick-off for having a player in front of the kicker and went downhill from there.

They also had to make a number of late changes after three players were suspended following their semi-final win over the Townsville Stingers.

Both teams were guilty of playing below their best early in the match with plenty of errors marring the best efforts of the two sides.

However, once Redcliffe stepped into gear, there was no stopping them, with winger Lui Tusa scoring the first points for this side after producing a clever take from behind his body to run in and score.

The Dolphins scored twice more in the half to take a 16-4 lead into halftime after White’s Brett Stratton also showed some individual talent to grab a four-pointer for his side.

In order to stay in the game – the Gold Coast needed to be the first on the board after halftime – but after they couldn’t hold Redcliffe five-eighth Alex Alberts back from the line – the story of their afternoon was set in stone.

The Dolphins ran in six more tries in the second half, with winger Josh Kerr scoring two impressive tries from kicks – leaping high above the opposition both times to come down with the ball to find the tryline.

With time running out, Gold Coast clawed back a little respectability on the scoreboard with two late tries to Harry Hughes and Aaron Booth but it was not enough.

Soon after, Man of the Match Deacon Fletcher added the icing for the Dolphins in the closing stages of the game with a great run down the field; proving too elusive from inside his own half to score the last try of the afternoon and cement the big victory.

The Dolphins will meet their NSW counterparts in the National Final in a fortnight’s time. Keep an eye on www.qrl.com.au for more details regarding this match.
