CC & MM Cup Semi-Final Teams

Semi-Final Teams CC & MM Cups http://admin.nrl.sportal.net.au/site/_content/document/00004017-source.pdf

WITH the final round of the Cyril Connell Cup and Mal Meninga Cup now wrapped up – this year’s semi-final combatants have been decided.

In the Connell Cup – it was close-run thing in both Pool A and Pool B – with both the Norths Devils and Gold Coast White finishing behind Easts Tigers (14 points) on 10 points in the south east zone.

However, their superior for-and-against total saw the Devils earn their place in week 1 of the finals over White.

Easts did the Devils a big favour as well in the standings – with the undefeated Tigers ensuring they went through the regular rounds without a loss after Reece Braun kicked a field goal to secure a 17-16 win over the unlucky Gold Coast White.

In Pool B – despite a last-round loss to Northern Pride – the Sunshine Coast Falcons remained at the top of their pool with 11 points; while the Stingers’ 32-24 win over Central United helped them secure 10 competition points and the remaining spot in the finals.

There was not much more fellow contenders the Toowoomba Clydesdales and the Northern Pride could do – with the two teams also finishing the regular rounds on 10 points.

The Stingers’ for-and-against saw them finish with a points differential of (plus) 46, compared to 28 for the Pride and 20 for the Clydesdales.

In the Mal Meninga Cup – there is a possibility of a repeat of last year’s state final match – with both the Redcliffe Dolphins and Townsville Stingers again topping their respective pools to reach this weekend’s semi-finals.

However in order to get there – Redcliffe must defeat the Northern Pride – who will again have to make the formidable journey to Dolphin Oval – something which proved too much for the side last year.

The Stingers will face a new challenger this year in Gold Coast White who finished their round 7 match as 32-16 winners over the Tigers. Dylan Mathers helped his team get the win scoring a hat-trick at Scott Park.

It will be a full day of games scheduled for Dolphin Oval this Saturday – and with the top teams striving to earn their place in next weekend’s state championship match in both age groups – all four games should be great quality.

The winner of the state finals will then get the opportunity to go for the national title when they play the NSW state title holders on May 11.

Dolphins primed for Cup finals
http://www.redcliffedolphins.com.au/?id=5137

A strong 46-16 final round victory over Norths at Bishop Park last weekend has seen the Village Motors Redcliffe Dolphins Mal Meninga Cup side secure first place in their pool at the conclusion of the regular season.

Finishing first in their pool means the Dolphins will take on the strong Northern Pride outfit at Dolphin Oval this Saturday afternoon.

Dolphins coach Ben Jones will be spending the week concentrating on his side's preparation for this weekend rather than focusing too much on what the Northern Pride can do.

"They are obviously a good side or they wouldn't have made it this far, we may get a little homework done on them during the week, but we'll be mainly concentrating on our preparation as usual," he said.

Jones said the Dolphins won't be looking to change their game plan too much leading up to the all important clash on Saturday.

"We've spoken about ball control all year and how much bearing that has on a game, if we can limit their opportunities and stick to our game plan we will give ourselves every chance," he said.

The Dolphins will be looking to lay a strong foundation up front through Nathan Watts, Andrew McArthy, Tyson Cleal and interchange forwards Mitch Sargent and Josh Fuimaono.

One player that has impressed Jones with his go forward and hard hitting defence is hard working 17-year-old front rower Nathan Watts.

"Nathan has been outstanding week in, week out. His hit ups have been very strong and gives us that momentum going forward," Jones said.

Another player to watch is Bribie Island product Alex Albert who adds a bit of an X factor to the Dolphins attack, he has been named at five-eighth after playing several positions during the competition.

An extra bonus for the Dolphins side is they have nine players backing up from last year's Mal Meninga Cup finals campaign including Josh Beehag and Tyson Cleal who went on to be part of the Dolphins Colts premiership winning side last year.

The Village Motors Dolphins side is 1. Josh Beehag 2. Lui Tusa 3. Sam Leach 4. Rinsma Saueha 5. Josh Kerr 6. Alex Albert 7. Mitch Wilson 8. Andrew McArthy 9. Jack Alley 10. Nathan Watts 11. Richie Skelton 12. Joel Mayne 13. Tyson Cleal Interchange 14. Deacon Fletcher 15. Mitch Sargent 16. Jeremy Skelton 17. Josh Fuimaono. Coach Ben Jones

*Dolphins season ticket holders receive free admission to the matches on Saturday as well as Sunday.
